Having decided on my topic, my next consideration was the ethics regarding it. I knew it was going to be a tough balance to find between the content I want to show and the content I'm allowed to show.
I already knew some aspects of the law surrounding paedophile hunting, such as not being allowed to show anything that could lead to the jigsaw identification of any suspected predators, when I'm on a sting.
However, I wanted to be sure I wasn't setting myself up for any ethical or lawful issues, so I arranged a meeting with our Media Law lecturer, David Mascord.
David mapped out exactly for me what can and can't be done in this documentary, including the laws surrounding showing previous footage from the hunting teams I'm interviewing, even with the convictions being made, I still shouldn't show faces in case they're now in the midst of another trial, which is something I overlooked.
Now with my ethical considerations worked out, I can now begin to develop a narrative in my head of how I want my documentary to be shot.
